Spike Lee’s When the Levees Broke documentary about the devastation and political fallout following Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath was received with critical acclaim and was honored with the Polk Award for the most outstanding documentary film. . However if there was one complaint it was that Spike Lee’s film focused solely on the situation in New Orleans and much like the press coverage neglected the devastated citizens of Mississippi.  Lee hopes to rectify this with a second HBO ‘Levee’ type documentary.Â
In May, the filmmaker will go back to HBO to plot how to continue the series, Lee announced Friday during the American Society of Newspaper Editors Convention in Washington, DC. “The Gulf Coast will be a much bigger part. We didn’t forget about you,” Lee proclaimed while addressing an editor of the Biloxi Sun-Herald, whose paper has attempted to keep America cognizant of Mississippi’s plight since Katrina.
At the convention, Lee’s discussed the progress of three Katrina victims who were featured in the film: Fred J. Johnson, Phyliss Montana LeBlanc and Gralen B. Banks. You can read more at manardije.com
