Grey’s Anatomy star Isaiah Washington has announced that he has enrolled in counseling at a residential rehab facility, according to a statement from his rep, Kelly Mullens. Washington, 43, has been under public scrutiny after he used an anti-gay slur at a Golden Globes press conference last week after the hit ABC drama received an award.
“With the support of my family and friends, I have begun counseling. I regard this as a necessary step toward understanding why I did what I did and making sure it never happens again. I appreciate the fact that I have been given this opportunity and I remain committed to transforming my negative actions into positive results, personally and professionally,” his statement said.
Shonda Rhimes, the executive producer of Grey’s Anatomy, said in a statement “We’ve been working within the Grey’s family as well as with ABC and Touchstone Television to address the issue in a way that underscores the gravity of the situation while giving us all a foundation for healing. We applaud and encourage Isaiah’s realization that he needs help and his subsequent choice to seek immediate treatment for his behavioral issues,” the statement said.
Washington was criticized for his answer to a question about an October on-set argument with co-star Patrick Dempsey. During the argument, he allegedly referred to cast member T.R. Knight using an anti-gay slur.
“No, I did not call T.R. a ‘faggot,’ ” Washington told reporters in the Golden Globes press room. “It never happened.”
Rumors have been swirling that the network may fire the actor. It’s not known if the counceling will help Washington keep his job on the hit show.
“I know the power of words, especially those that demean,” Washington later said in a statement. “I realize that by using one filled with disrespect I have hurt more than T.R. and my colleagues. With one word, I’ve hurt everyone who has struggled for the respect so many of us take for granted. I welcome the chance to meet with leaders of the gay and lesbian community to apologize in person and to talk about what I can do to heal the wounds I’ve opened.”

As a Black Gay Man, I understand the intolerance and ignorance that abounds within the black community. It is the primary reason why so many brothers are undercover. While I personally am not all that undercover, in certainly understand the need for privacy especially in the workplace where people knowledge of your personal life can have an impact on ones career. TR Knight HAD to come out because of this and it may have damaged his future career. That’s a big deal. Our people better wake up and stop all the hate. Gay bashing is NEVER an acceptable behavior. FAGGOT NIGGER …….are not pretty words guys. And if you call me that, I happen to be the kind of gay man that might knock you in your MFing mouth! Stereotypes will get you in trouble eveytime. Let me paint a hypothetical situation to compare with the whole thing. What if it had gone down like this….what if Isaiah Washington was late for the shoot, and one of the white co-stars being impatient just blurted out…â€HEY, hurry up NIGGER we ain’t got all day to wait on you!â€
Now would yall be ok with just an apology and move on? Would you really? Hmph! That’s what I thought. HELL NO you wouldn’t be ok with it.
Bottom line is that everyone deserves respect. Washington was just stupid to do that on the GLOBE Awards. I couldn’t believe he brought it back up. Just NO CLASS!! NO CLASS!! NO CLASS!! And just a damned lie too! When all the cast members HEARD HIM! Now ya’ll keep tryin to come up with an excuse for his ass but tough titty. And the odd thing is he even played a gay character on that Spike Lee Million Man March movie if you remember it…..GET ON THE BUS.
Bruce Willis, that SEINFELD guy, and now Isaiah Washington…….bottom line is this……people gonna learn to watch they damn mouths. Cause with technology today your bad behavior goes from the cell phone to the YOUTUBE in 10 minutes and ….BLOOP!….you’re a STAR!
