The man responsible for the death of D12 rapper Proof was sentenced Thursday (Oct. 26) for his role in the fatal shooting.

Wayne County Circuit’s Vera Massey Jones sentenced Mario Etheridge to time served in addition to a $2,000 fine, the Detroit Free Press reports.

The 28-year-old Detroit man, who was convicted last month of carrying a concealed weapon and discharging a firearm in a dwelling or occupied structure, is now free.

The concealed weapon charge carried a maximum penalty of five years in prison, while the firearm discharge harbored a four-year maximum stint. Both charges are felonies.

Etheridge’s sentencing marks a new chapter in the aftermath of Proof’s death.

The 32-year-old lyricist (born Deshaun Holton) was shot April 11 outside the C.C.C. nightclub by Etheridge after he allegedly shot and fatally wounded Etheridge’s cousin, Keith Bender Jr.

Etheridge, a bouncer with no prior criminal convictions, was given time served for having an unlicensed gun, according to the Free Press, which stated that the fine was the result of shooting the gun in a building.
